Real Madrid defeated by Atletico Madrid 4-2

Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid coach heaped praise on Antoine Griezmann following the forward’s superb goal against Real Madrid on Thursday. Griezmann scored in extra time as Atlético won 4-2 against their city rivals to reach the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. Real Madrid had just been eliminated from the Copa del Rey in the round of 16 and had lost a match at the home of city rivals Atletico.

In extra-time courtesy of two goals from Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme sent Atleti into the last eight as Real’s 21-match unbeaten streak came to an end. Los Blancos had the first real opportunity after 12 minutes when Jude Bellingham found his way into the penalty area and slipped the ball through Witsel’s legs before unleashing a thunderous strike that smashed the crossbar.

Samuel Lino opened the scoring for the hosts from a counterattack in the 39th minute, tapping in from point-blank range after center-back Rudiger miskicked a clearance backward to gift him the ball. Jan Oblak’s goalkeeper returned the Favour when he made a mistake trying to punch a Luka Modric free-kick away and sent the ball into his own net just before the break.

Another mistake ended in a goal when in the 57th minute Eduardo Camavinga sent a poor pass back to his own area which confounded Andriy Lunin and Rudiger, the ball falling to Alvaro Morata who shot it into an empty net. At last, Morata missed a sitter from close range which led to a Real counterattack. Jude Bellingham crossed to Joselu who headed the equaliser to take the match to extra time.

Griezmann in the 100th minute to steal the ball from Vinicius Jr on the halfway line and burst up into the box to score. Riquelme secured the win in the 119th minute with a Firey finish.
