Patrick Mahomes Helmet Damage Sparks Safety Questions Amid Frigid Game Conditions

In a surprising turn of events, Patrick Mahomes’ helmet was damaged during Saturday night’s game. Patrick Mahomes found himself surprised to face an unexpected hurdle as his helmet was damaged because of the extreme cold.

Mahomes said that he had never seen a football helmet damaged this way. Before the match, he had never played in such so cold conditions.

Mahomes said, “I have not. I am sure it had to do with it being really cold.”

Mahomes also said that he was unaware of his broken helmet until his teammates informed him. Mahomes wanted to be in the game with that broken helmet.

He said, “I didn’t know what happened in the moment but I got in the huddle and everyone was telling me, but I was like, ‘I got y’all, but I’m not coming out of the game, so we can figure it out on the sideline, “It was a first for me.”

The officials had to stop the play eventually so that he could be given a replacement of the helmet. But Mahomes said, the helmet was so cold to get on his head, it was so difficult to wear that.

Mahomes said, “They have a backup that’s out there. We have to talk about where we store the backup because it was frozen — when I tried to put it on it was completely frozen. I couldn’t put it on,”

Mahomes was a bit angry. While the situation was resolved, questions arose about the safety testing for football helmets. These helmets should undergo approval processes before being in the NFL. It is still not clear if the testing was done under extreme temperatures.

Calls are now being made for both the NFL and the NFL Players Association to insist on safety testing helmets in cold environments.

If it is found that there is such a temperature limit in which helmets can’t perform reliably then it is too cold to play.
