On Wednesday the Newport Beach Police Department announced it had closed its investigation into an alleged inappropriate relationship between Josh Giddey and an underage girl. However, the NBA plans to still thoroughly look at the matter.
Last year in November, photos and videos of the Giddey went viral after he was seen posing with an alleged minor. Giddey, 21, reportedly had a previous relationship with a girl rumored to be 15.
Newport Beach Police Department said, “After a thorough and exhaustive examination, we have completed our investigation into information that was circulating on social media involving Josh Giddey. “Our detectives have reviewed all of the available information and were unable to corroborate any criminal activity related to Mr. Giddey.
Images and video of Giddey and a girl who is allegedly underage went viral in November. The investigation was started by the NBA to look into the matter at the time, but Commissioner Adam Silver later said that the league’s probe would take “a backseat” after police launched their inquiry.
Now that the police investigation is over, the league is “continuing our review” of the matter NBA spokesman Michael Bass said Wednesday.
Giddey was not suspended during the police inquiry and has appeared in 39 games missing only one game against the Lakers because of an ankle injury on December 23. He is averaging 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists, all career lows, this season. Giddey led Australia with 19.4 points a game at the World Cup last summer.
